Betty June Smith passed away on December 30, 2023 after a short illness. Betty was born June 29, 1935 in Climax, Georgia to parents Lloyd Woodward and Lavada (Cooper) Woodward both now deceased. She was preceded in death by her first husband Rufus A. Holt and her second husband Donald L. Smith. She was also predeceased by sisters Irene Dixon and Ophelia Brock and brothers Gerald Woodward, Lester Woodward, and John Woodward, and her son Larry Holt.
She is survived by a sister Tina Sowell, sister-in-law Betty (Norm) Beckman, daughters Nancie Escruceria, Susan Pagley, Dona (Don) Swain, Kaye Lynn Lipe, Kathy (Ed) Lopez, and sons Donald L. Smith Jr., and John Dale Smith. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Betty grew up in the small town of Faceville, Georgia and graduated from Faceville High School. She had the opportunity to travel the world as a military spouse and her outgoing personality helped her adjust and make friends easily. She and her husband Don settled in his hometown of Alto Pass, Illinois after his military retirement.
Betty was a loving and devoted mother and in later years she found great enjoyment as a grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a long career as a real estate agent in Union County.
She was an avid reader, an accomplished painter of ceramics, and enjoyed board games, card games, and scrapbooking. She was at her happiest when the house was filled with family and friends. In 2020 Betty moved to South Carolina to live with her daughter Dona and son-in-law Don. She eventually settled at Myrtle Beach Grove Assisted Living where she enjoyed the wide variety of activities available there.
Betty will be cremated, and memorial services will be held at Rendleman and Hileman funeral home in Anna, Illinois on Saturday, April 20. The family will receive visitors from 10:30 am-12:00 pm. Memorial service will start at 12:00 pm with interment following at Alto Pass Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Southern Illinois Center for Independent Living, 2135 W Ramada Ln, Carbondale, IL 62901. Envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home.
